Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive surgery is performed to treat the abnormalities caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumor/cancer or other diseases that lead to loss of functions and appearance. Typically reconstructive surgery can fall into the following categories:
1. Hand Surgery: primarily done to treat any impairment and improve strength, function and flexibility of the wrist and fingers. Such a surgery seeks to improve the congenital defects, restore the normal functionality and correct other abnormalities that might occur otherwise. Some of the most common surgeries include:
a. Carpal Tunnel Surgery: A condition caused by the compression of the median nerve within the wrist / carpal tunnel. Some of the common symptoms include a tingling sensation, numbness, weakness or itching. In severe cases, a patient can even arise from her/his sleep due to excruciating pain.
b. Rheumatoid Arthritis: A disease characterized by severe inflammation in any joint of the body. In hand, it can lead to deformity and impair movement.
c. Dupuytren’s Contracture: Formation of thick, scar-like tissue bands within the palm and extending into the fingers. It is a disabling hand disorder that leads to limited movement and abnormal bending of the fingers
2. Skin Cancer Surgery: Treatment of skin cancer can lead to scars or disfigurement. Skin reconstructive surgery can help regain the appearance of the skinby removal of cancerous growths, by preserving the health of the patient
3. Scars: Normally caused after a wound is healed. Scars are unavoidable consequences of injuries, cuts or surgery. And at times, they are aesthetically unattractive. The scars cannot be removed completely; however, their intensity and color can be reduced significantly to make them consistent with the surrounding tissue. Some of the techniques include simple topical treatments, minimally invasive procedures and surgical revision with advanced techniques in wound closure.
4. Tissue Expansion: It is straight forward procedure to ‘grow’ extra skin, primarily for reconstruction of a part of body. Normally, in this procedure, a silicon balloon is inserted under the skin and slowly filled with salt & water solution, causing the skin to stretch and grow. Typically, it is used for breast reconstruction following breast removal; however, it can also be used for treating certain congenital skin defects and disorders caused by accident or trauma.
5. Cleft Lip & Palate Surgery: Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis) are quite common amongst the birth defects in children. It is caused during fetal development and certain components of the upper lip and roof of the mouth fail to form normally. Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery is performed at artificially create this abnormality and improve a child’s ability to eat, speak, hear, breathe, and normal appearance and condition.
