Infertility / Assisted Reproduction
Infertilityis defined as the inability of a couple to conceive naturally. Primary Infertility is described as the inability to conceive after at least 1 year of unprotected sex (intercourse). Secondary Infertility is described when couples who have been pregnant at least once, are unable to conceive again.
Infertility can be caused by both physical and emotional factors, arising in both male and female partners.
Female infertility can be due to:
Fertilized egg or embryo inability to survive after attaching to uterus lining
Fertilized egg unable to attach to the uterus lining
Eggs being could not move from the ovary to the uterus
Inability of the ovaries to produce eggs
Male infertility can be due to:
Insufficient sperm count
Blocked sperm
Sperm that does not work properly
Female: Blood hormone levels, FSH &Clomid Challenge Test, HSG, Pelvic Ultrasound, Pelvic Exam,
Thyroid Function Test, Serum Progesterone, etc.
Male: Sperm Analysis and Testicular biopsy (if required)
Assisted Reproduction is a technique to obtain a pregnancy by means other than the natural intercourse. We at Medical Tourism (powered by J Morgan Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) provide a complete range of assisted reproductive procedures:
Intra Uterine Insemination: Process in which semen is directly placed in the uterus with the help of a catheter. It is primarily done in a natural cycle. However, at times, it is usually preceded by ovulation induction / ovarian stimulation using appropriate fertility enhancing drugs.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Test Tube Baby: Process to fertilize the ovum outside the body of the female and consequently transfer the fertilized ova (embryos) into the uterus. It does not require any hospitalization and can be performed on an out-patient basis.
Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Mainly performed to overcome the inability of the sperm to fertilize an egg. In this process the sperm is directly inserted, with the help of a micromanipulator, into the cytoplasm of an egg in order to achieve fertilization. In rare cases of complete sperm absence during an ejaculate, sperm is retrieved from the testis / epididymis and used for the procedure. Some of the techniques to extract the sperm include PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration), TESA (Testicular Sperm Extraction), MESA (MicrosurgicalEpididymal Sperm Aspiration) and TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction).
IVF using donor eggs: Women who are incapable of producing their own eggs or fail to produce potent eggs during an IVF cycle can be assisted by using other women’s eggs or female donor eggs.
Surrogacy: It is a procedure in which a woman carries and delivers a child on behalf of other person/couple. The surrogate can be the traditional surrogate by giving birth to a genetic child, or she may carry the pregnancy with accepting the embryo to her uterus. Commercial surrogacy, in which the surrogate receives compensation for carrying and delivering the child, was legalized by the Supreme Court of India in 2002.
Assisted Hatching: This procedure is based on the fact that an alteration in zonapellucida (outer covering of the eggs) either by drilling a hole thought it or by thinning it, will promote hatching or implantation of embryos that are otherwise unable to escape intact from the zonapellucida.
Cryo Preservation of Embryos (embryo freezing): Excess (surplus) can be cryo-preserved at ultra-low temperatures for many years. These frozen embryos can be used subsequently without the need for ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. However, the pregnancy rates following transfers of frozen embryos are lower than that with the fresh embryos.
