Hair Transplant
Hair Transplant is a surgical technique to get back the lost hair. Hair loss is a common phenomenon, and so far, no conclusive evidence for its cause and occurrence has been established. In this procedure, the hair follicles from one part of the body are transferred to the bald or balding parts. In addition to hair loss on head, this procedure is also performed to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, and chest hair.
The most common hair transplant procedure is known as the Follicle Unit Transplantation (FUT). The hair can be harvested by following ways:
Strip Harvesting: A strip of scalp is removed from the donor site and is cut into smaller pieces called as grafts. The wound is sutured back leaving a linear scar that should be covered by patient’s hair that would grow with time. The grafts are transplanted on the balding area of the patient. Typically, recovery takes around 2 weeks and requires the removal of stitches.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): Individual follicles are removed from the donor area and are reinserted in the scalp area using a micro blade. No tissue or scalp is removed. Also, it is less painful and the recovery time is around one week.
In either procedure, a typical patient experiences shedding of both transplanted and non-transplanted hair. However, since the roots remain active, the full grown hair is expected to come within 6-8 months. The cost of hair transplant varies from 60c to $2 per hair follicle. Typically for a small area the total cost is US$ 1000, medium area – US$ 1900 and for a large area – approx. 2700. However, the exact cost varies with the type of facility, specialist and the precise area for transplantation.
